Curt and Shonda Schilling’s SHADE Foundation of America and

Jones and Bartlett Publishers Team Up to Fight Melanoma

August 27, 2007 SUDBURY, MA - Jones and Bartlett Publishers (J&B) today announced a partnership agreement with the SHADE Foundation of America to custom publish a new edition of 100 Questions & Answers About Melanoma and Other Skin Cancers. The new edition, scheduled to publish in early September, will be available exclusively through the SHADE Foundation, a nonprofit organization founded by melanoma survivor Shonda Schilling.

“We’re proud to be working with the SHADE Foundation to promote awareness of melanoma,” said Clayton Jones, CEO at J&B. “SHADE’s mission of educating youths on the warning signs and risk factors of skin cancer mirrors J&B’s mission of promoting education worldwide.”

Authored by Dr. Edward McClay, Mary-Eileen McClay and Jodie Smith, 100 Questions & Answers About Melanoma and Other Skin Cancers gives readers authoritative, practical answers to questions about treatment options, post-treatment quality of life, sources of support, and much more. Written by two skin healthcare professionals and a melanoma survivor, this book is an invaluable resource for anyone coping with the physical and emotional turmoil of this frightening disease.

Says Shonda Schilling, “Healing your body and spirit after a new diagnosis begins with education. That is why I think this book is so important! It provides answers to common questions about the disease, how it is diagnosed and treated, and how to cope with your illness. When you feel you understand your diagnosis, you can begin steps to learn to live with it. We are excited to work with Jones and Bartlett Publishers on this project and we hope this book will bring those facing melanoma one step closer to getting their life back.”

One of the leading publishers in patient education resources, J&B’s exclusive 100 Questions & Answers Series, with over two million copies in print, combines the expertise of physicians and nurses with a patient’s point of view to provide authoritative, practical guides to dealing with specific diseases. Over 70 titles in this series cover basic questions about each disease or health topic such as risk factors and causes; methods of prevention, screening, and diagnosis; available treatments and how to choose among them; and ways of coping with common emotional and physical difficulties associated with the diagnosis and treatment.

Melanoma, though the most serious skin cancer, is not the most common. Risk factors include excessive exposure to sunlight, moles, fair skin, and family history. When found early and treated properly, melanoma is almost 100% curable.

About the SHADE Foundation of America – www.shadefoundation.org

The SHADE Foundation is a nonprofit organization founded by Shonda Schilling in 2002, after she underwent five surgeries to treat stage 2 malignant melanoma. The goal of the SHADE Foundation is to promote education and awareness to children, to provide information on products and clothing that can protect from harmful UV rays, and to promote the SunWise curriculum in schools. It is also, in the words of Mrs. Schilling, “to help people start to heal.”
