Chapter 7 - Molecules and the Origin of Life

If you have Netscape 3.0 or higher, you can download a plug-in and tutorial on the DNA strands. The strand model may be variously represented, modified, labeled, colored, and turned. It makes a wonderful tutorial. I've had the best luck with tutorial 5, "Strands and helical backbone."

  • Visit the DNA Structure web site.

  • (The site will open externally in a new window)

How do the ribosomal subunits fit in relation to the chain of messenger RNA? View the Image Library of Biological Molecules reconstruction and rotate the structure to see it from all sides. You may also view a slice of a mitochondrion from the same web site.

Stanley Miller conducted a famous experiment in which conditions presumed for the early Earth were subjected to an electric spark. Certain biochemicals were found in the apparatus. What did Stanley Miller think of this experiment, why did he do it, and what is his view of origin of life issues in general?
