  Chapter 6 - The Earth

Earth's geological features have been modified progressively over time. Access the page showing the step faults of Temiscamingae to view an animation of uplift, faulting, and erosion to convert a flat sedimentary plane into a mix of igneous and sedimentary-lined basins.

Discoveries of Earth's history of shifting continents, mountain building, spreading of the sea floor, and many other phenomena were parts of a true revolution in science. "Continental Drift" was hypothecised by Wegener; later its context of "plate tectonics" was discovered.
  • Visit the Plate Tectonics web site.

Earth is still a very active planet. Sea floor spreading, volcanic activity, and other earth-shaping phenomena continue today. Search the geodynamics branch web site for topics that interest you. Surtsey, a new volcanic island off the coast of Iceland and sea floor spreading may be good examples.
