Chapter 3 - The Arguments and the Evidence

Charles Darwin knew natural selection had to be accompanied by an inheritance system in which blending did not dilute the selected effects. He proposed pangenesis, which turned out to be wrong, in his 1883 book on domestication of plants and animals. Read Chapter XXVII, a "provisional hypothesis" that Darwin had proposed.

Comparative anatomy provides considerable evidence for the common origins of animals. The brain is an important organ with some very striking relationhips of its structure to animal position in evolution. Find some representatives to animal brains. Do you see similarities, differences?

The Galapagos Islands had a great impact upon Darwin though he did not "solve" the species questions while he was there. What are the arrangements, geology, and climates of the islands? Are there fishes along their coasts? Select two or three islands that interest you and read some details of their natural (or at least tourist) appeal.
