Chapter 25 - Culture and the Control of Human Evolution

Stephen Jay Gould is one of America’s great essayists. He has written extensively on the subject of evolution, building concepts of its historical roots, its current interpretations, and its limitations. Gould has strong views and a powerful voice. Read the transcript of David Gergen’s interview of Stephen Jay Gould or listen to the recorded exerpt from National Public Radio. What does Gould think about using evolutionary principles as a yardstick by which to judge human affairs or progress?

Richard Dawkins is a British geneticist whose skill in discussing evolution for the public has been polished to a very high degree. One of his famous books is The Selfish Gene, but of special importance is The Extended Phenotype. “The World of Richard Dawkins” is not his personal web site but it is a very convenient entry into some of Dawkins’ writings or comments that have been reproduced on the web. Select one or more of the exerpts of Richard Dawkins’ opinions and determine how this modern interpreter of evolution views the relationships of biology to the questions of human institutions and roles. Does Dawkins find it productive to use biological evolution to analyze human institutions?

This completes our website for Evolution, the history of life, the understanding of science, the growth of mankind, and the heritages those all bring. It seems somewhat appropriate to return to one brief time in our ascendency and with our browser to illuminate the walls of this beautiful cave, to review its geology, preservation, and presumed signficance in our own evolution.
