  Chapter 17 - Hox genes and hindbrain development


Figure 17-5 of Strickberger suggests relationships of Amphioxus hox genes to the vertebrate hind brian and rhombomeres. Recent studies of development in animals show the powerful organizing effects of these genes. This paper by Carpenter, Goddard, Chisaka, Manley, and Capecchi could turn out to be one of an important series of papers clarifying these relationships. Read the abstract, introduction, captions to figures, and conclusions to gain an insight into this approach to resolving vertebrate origins. Note, you need not understand the entiire paper.

What is a hagfish? What are their general characters and habits?

How do fish compare with other vertebrates in their cardiovascular and respiratory control? Taylor, Jordan, and Coote (1999) explore these issues. Check, for example, section D, part II, on "air-breathing fish." It's interesting. There is a wealth of information in this major review paper.
