Chapter 14 - From Protozoa to Metazoa

Haikouella lanceol: An Early Chordate. The first chordates to be found are in Cambrian sediments. Haikouella lanceol was recently described in China as one of the earliest found chordates. Chien, Huang, and Li, paleontologists associated with discovery describe the fossil and its signifcance. Read the article on Haikouella lanceol. Consider teh illustartions and photos of the fossil. Does it seem easy to describe and to interpret such a fossil? What significance do they authors attach to their find?

Read other descriptions and see sketches of animals from the Burgess Shale sediments.

Metazoans, multicellular animals, may have arisen from single-celled organisms similar to choanoflagellates. Sponges may be the oldest relic group of metazoans living today. Read an American Scientist article summarizing these views.
