Chapter 21 - Populations, Gene Frequencies, and Equilibrium
Darwin devised his theory of evolution without particular regard to the genetic and population nuances of his theory. Mendel’s experiments followed 1859 (year of the first edition of Darwin’s Origin of Species) by some years, but serious critics of Darwin’s ideas plunged into genetic arguments. The result has been a new level of understanding, a new synthesis, which shows that mutations and population genetics fit nicely with Darwin’s original ideas.
