Chapter 17 - Origin of Vertebrates

Vertebrates have four distinctive characteristics: clefts in the region of the pharynx, a notochord or vertebral column, a tail, and a single nerve cord that is dorsal. Despite this, origins of the vertebrates are not clear. For a long time, the attention of biologists has been fixed upon several subphyla of the vertebrata. Now, attention is also turning to genetic control of differentiation in search of vertebrate origins

Topics for Chapter 17:

  • Hemichordata

  • Cephalochordata

  • Urochordata

  • Genetic Bases of Dorsal-Ventral Polarity
