About the Course:
This 10 hour construction safety course is focused on road construction and maintenance activities. Course topics highlight specific road construction hazards and include: Introduction to OSHA, Electrical Hazards, Fall Protection, Motor Vehicles/Mechanized Equipment, Cranes and Aerial Lifts, Excavations, Workzone Traffic Control, Roadway Construction Common Hazards, Roadway Construction Health Hazards, and Roadway Special Considerations. This course is authorized by the OSHA Training Institute under the OSHA Outreach Program. Students completing the course will receive a DOL completion card.
Learning Objectives:
- Know the basics of the Occupational Safety and Health Act and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, referred to as OSHA.
- Understand the basic principles of electrical safety, be able to identify a number of electrical hazards typically found on construction sites and determine effective means to deal with those hazards, and understand and be able to effectively utilize ground fault protection devices. Know the requirements for lockout and tagout systems.
- Understand the OSHA fall protection standard, requirements for fall protection, and how to recognize, evaluate, and control fall hazards. Be able to identify cranes and crane types, understand up-to-date terminology, know proper set up procedures, be able to identify and control crane related hazards. Understand and be able to recognize and control the hazards associated with the use of motorized mobile platforms including scissor lifts and boom lifts, and personnel platforms for use with cranes and fork trucks.
- Understand the Fed-OSHA Excavation Standard and the practical application of the standard with respect to: Soil safety, soil mechanics, soil classification.
- Understand the role of the competent person regarding soil analysis and excavation safety. Understand specific excavation requirements and protective systems, know safe work practices and how to identify and control or eliminate hazards. Understand the sloping and benching requirements for types A, B and C soils, know where to locate and use the shoring tables for both timber shoring and aluminum hydraulic shoring. Understand the basic requirements for using trench boxes or shields as an alternative to sloping or shoring.
- Be able to properly select, use, maintain, inspect and store various types of personal protective equipment as required in a variety of work environments. Understand specific requirements for high visibility apparel.
- Know the hazards, requirements, safe work practices, and controls that will promote safety during construction and highway maintenance activities where you may be exposed to traffic hazards.
- Know how to recognize and control hazards common to road construction and maintenance. Know how to recognize and control health hazards common to road construction and maintenance. Be able to identify a confined space, its hazards, and the requirements for permit required confined spaces, and know the duties and responsibilities of confined space workers. Be aware of and know how to anticipate and deal with emergencies expected in road construction environments.
