Adrian J. Goldszmidt, MD, is Director of the Cerebrovascular Disorders Program at Sinai Hospital and Instructor in Neurology at Johns Hopkins University Medical School, Baltimore, Maryland. After completing medical school at Harvard, he trained in Neurology at Harvard's Longwood program in Boston, then did a stroke fellowship at New England Medical Center. Dr. Goldszmidt has been an investigator in numerous acute stroke trials and has research interests in platelet function in stroke. Louis R. Caplan, MD, is Director of Cerebrovascular Disease, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston, Massachusetts; Professor of Neurology, Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts; and one of the world’s leading authorities on stroke. During his distinguished career, he served as Chair of the Neurology Department at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, Neurologist-in-Chief at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago and the New England Medical Center in Boston, Professor of Neurology at the University of Chicago, and Professor and Chairman of the Department of Neurology and Professor of Medicine at Tufts Medical Center in Boston. He also served as Chairman of the Stroke Council of the American Heart Association and as chair of numerous neurological and stroke organizations. At Beth Israel Hospital, he founded the Harvard Stroke Registry. He is a diplomat of both the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Neurology and Psychiatry. He is the author or editor of 26 books, including the landmark textbook, Stroke: A Clinical Approach, now in its third edition, and he has contributed more than 500 scholarly articles to the medical literature. He also serves or has served on the editorial board of 21 medical journals. He speaks nationally and internationally on stroke and has delivered 18 named lectureships, including the 2000 Thomas Willis lecture for the American Heart Association. Dr.Caplan has received several teaching awards as well as the Distinguished Achievement Award from the American Heart Association.
