Dee McGonigle, PhD, RN, FACCE, FAAN - Penn State University, New Kensington, Editor-in-Chief, Online Journal or Nursing Informatics (OJNI)

Dr. McGonigle received her baccalaureate degree in nursing from Penn State University, a master's degree in nursing from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and her doctorate in Foundations of Education from the University of Pittsburgh. She is an Associate Professor of Nursing, Information Sciences & Technology (IST) and Computational Science at Penn State University, a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing and the Editor-in-Chief of the Online Journal of Nursing Informatics (OJNI). She is actively involved in integrating active and collaborative learning strategies into traditional as well as on-line courses. Dr. McGonigle is interested in the educational impact of the human-technology interface. She conceptualized and was instrumental in the development and implementation of the Online RN to BS Nursing Degree program delivered through the World Campus. Dr. McGonigle has co-authored a textbook, Nursing Informatics and the Foundation of Knowledge that was published by Jones and Bartlett in August of 2008. She has over 100 publications, 30 funded grants and 29 international and national presentations. She is a consultant to the Hartford Foundation grant at University Park, a faculty member of the Hartford Center for Geriatric Nursing Excellence at Penn State, has developed a doctoral level course on technological innovations in teaching and learning, led the development of the recruitment videos and moderated the Hartford Center Radio Shows. Dr. McGonigle is committed to the insightful analysis of ethical dilemmas brought on by this volatile information age. She continues to search for a way to facilitate translation by helping those who know (researchers) and those who do (clinicians) communicate and share. Dr. McGonigle is also interested in the diffusion of innovative technologies, especially those impacting learning.


Kathleen Mastrian, PhD, RN - Penn State Shenango

Dr. Kathleen Mastrian is an Associate Professor and Program Coordinator for Nursing at Penn State Shenango.  She earned as BS in Nursing at Penn State, a Master’s in Nursing from Pitt and a PhD in Medical Sociology from Kent State University.  She has been involved in the education of non-traditional aged students for 30 years in the RN to BS nursing program.  She pioneered the use of Credit by Portfolio Assessment to award advanced standing nursing credit for registered nurses.  She has also been active in the development of technology enhanced courses for registered nurses facilitating asynchronous participation and active and collaborative learning.  She is one of the founding proposers to place the RN to BS program online for the Penn State’s World Campus, has developed two of the courses for that curriculum, and teaches at least one section per semester for the World Campus program.  Recently, she has been asked to teach Sociology for the World Campus, and to facilitate the online teacher training course, OL2000 for Penn State’s World Campus.  She has published over 30 nursing journal articles and recently co-edited and published a textbook,  “Nursing Informatics and the Foundation of Knowledge”  (Jones and Bartlett 2009) that has been marketed in the US and abroad.
