Lisa P. Masteralexis, BS, JD - University of Massachusetts, Amherst

Departmental Head, Associate Professor, B.S., University of Massachusetts at Amherst, 1987. J.D., Suffolk University Law School, 1990.

Professor Masteralexis teaches courses in Amateur and Professional Sports Law and Labor Relations in Sport on both the undergraduate and graduate levels. She is a member of the American and Massachusetts Bar Associations and serves in a pro bono capacity for sport law cases, particularly in the areas of gender equity and athlete representation. She is a member of the Sport Lawyers Association, National Sports Law Institute, the North American Society for Sport Management, and the European Association for Sport Management. She has presented papers at their most recent conferences and/or published in their journals. She has co-authored a book in 1998 with Professor Carol Barr and Professor Mary Hums entitled "Principles and Practice of Sport Management." Beyond areas of sport law, her research interests include international issues and cultural training in sport management. On campus, Professor Masteralexis received a College Outstanding Teaching Award and a Lilly Fellowship in which she participated in a year-long study of college teaching. She also serves as faculty representative to the University's Athletic and Status of Women Councils and as advisor to the Women in Sport Management. She has been a member of the faculty since 1990.


Carol Barr, BS, MS, PhD - University of Massachusetts, Amherst

Dr. Carol A. Barr is an Associate Professor in the Sport Management Program at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.  She received her B.S. in Athletic Administration from the University of Iowa, and M.S. and Ph.D. in Sport Management from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.  Dr. Barr teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in the areas of College Athletics, Event Sponsorship, Event Management, and Organizational Behavior and Development.  Dr. Barr’s research interests and areas of specialization include management issues within collegiate athletics, and gender equity.  Dr. Barr is involved in the area of gender equity within interscholastic and intercollegiate athletics.  She has served as a consultant to the NCAA, the University's Athletic Department, and local school systems in Massachusetts.  She is also an expert on numerous areas of collegiate athletic administration and policy development in intercollegiate athletics.


Mary Hums, BBA, MBA, PhD - University of Louisville, Lafayette

Dr. Mary A. Hums, Ph.D.  is an Associate Professor in the Sport Administration Program at the University of Louisville. She holds a Ph.D. in Sport Management from Ohio State University, an M.A. in Athletic Administration as well as an M.B.A. from the University of Iowa, and a B.B.A. in Management from the University of Notre Dame.

In addition to being a Past President of the Society for the Study of Legal Aspects of Sport and Physical Activity (SSLASPA), she is an active member of:

  • The North American Society for Sport Management (NASSM)
  • The European Association of Sport Management (EASM)
  • The American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (AAHPERD)
  • The International Council of Sport Science and Physical Education (ICSSPE)
  • The National Intramural and Recreation Sports Association (NIRSA)

Prior to the University of Louisville, Hums served on the Sport Management faculty at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, directed the Sport Management Program at Kennesaw State University in Atlanta, and was Athletic Director at St. Mary-of-the-Woods College in Terre Haute, IN.
