Patricia G. O’Brien, PhD, RN, CS/NP, BC is Director of Behavioral Health Nursing and Inpatient Services at St. Vincent’s Catholic Medical Center, New York City. She is a licensed psychiatric nurse practitioner with prescriptive privileges and is board certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center as both a nurse practitioner and clinical specialist in adult psychiatric-mental health nursing.
Dr. O’Brien was formerly Associate Vice President for Regulatory and Professional Affairs at the Greater New York Hospital Association, specializing in mental health policy issues. She has held leadership positions in psychiatric nursing at New York Hospital’s Payne Whitney Clinic, and has maintained clinical practices as a nurse practitioner in a metropolitan hospital outpatient department and as a clinical nurse specialist in private practice.
Dr. O’Brien has a master of arts degree in nursing from New York University and a PhD in nursing from Adelphi University. A graduate of St. Vincent’s Hospital School of Nursing, she received her undergraduate degree in nursing from Hunter College, the City University of New York. Dr. O’Brien completed a postgraduate fellowship in cognitive-behavioral therapy at the Institute for Behavior Therapy in New York City, and studied behavior therapy under the supervision of Dr. Herbert Fensterheim at the Cornell University College of Medicine.
Dr. O’Brien is a member of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association, was appointed to the NYS Department of Education Task Force on the Nursing Shortage, and has been an item reviewer for the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Professional Nursing (NCLEX-RNâ).
